South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo have signed a bilateral treaty to jointly develop the Grand Inga power project. This hydropower project would be built on the Congo River in the DRC and would be built in six phase, before reaching a total capacity of 40 GW. Investment is estimated at around US$100bn. The treaty provides for the power to be shared between Congo DR, South Africa and other countries in the region. Congo DR has already received offers from three consortia to build the plant, namely China Three Gorges - Sinohydro; Posco - Daewoo - SNC-Lavalin; and ACS - Eurofinsa.
