Petronet announced its new LNG import terminal in Koshi, Kerala, India has been commissioned and it has received its first shipment of about 123,000 cm of LNG from Qatar. The Kochi terminal, the fourth Indian LNG terminal, is expected to promote a shift in India from conventional fuels such as petrol, diesel and naphtha to LNG. Petronet is India's largest importer of liquid gas. The Kochi LNG terminal will initially operate at about 8% of its annual capacity of 5 Mt/y (6.8bcm/y) as the facility has just two customers, the BPCL Refinery, and a fertilizer and chemical manufacturing company. A crucial step in the development of the Kochi LNG terminal will be the construction of a 600-km long pipeline through the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as part of the Kochi-Koottanadu-Bangalore-Mangalore pipeline.
